Boxer Dog Cardiac Supplements
Boxers have the highest rate of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC — also called Boxer cardiomyopathy) of any breed, and also elevated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) rates. Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death in Boxers. Proactive cardiac supplementation from age 2–3 is appropriate for this breed.
Boxer cardiac supplement protocol
- Omega-3 (EPA+DHA) at cardiac dose: ACVIM recommends omega-3 for dogs with confirmed cardiac disease. ~40mg/lb EPA+DHA daily. For a 65-lb Boxer: approximately 2,600mg EPA+DHA. Reduces inflammatory cytokine burden on cardiac muscle and supports cardiac muscle efficiency.
- Taurine: 500–1,000mg twice daily. Essential for cardiac muscle contraction. Boxers on grain-free diets should be monitored for taurine status — diet-associated DCM has been reported in this breed.
- CoQ10 (ubiquinol): 200mg daily. Mitochondrial energy support for cardiac muscle — the highest CoQ10-demand tissue in the body.
Annual monitoring
Annual Holter monitoring (24-hour ECG) from age 2 and echocardiography from age 3 are the Boxer-specific cardiac screening protocol. Supplements are adjuncts to veterinary monitoring — not substitutes for regular cardiac assessment.
