Cane Corso Supplements

The Cane Corso is a powerful Italian Mastiff-type breed reaching 90–120 lbs, with the joint loading, cardiac risks, and GDV susceptibility of other giant breeds. Their musculature and working-dog build create exceptional demands on joints, and their deep chest puts them at GDV risk. Giant-breed supplementation should begin at 12 months — before any symptoms emerge.

Primary health vulnerabilities in Cane Corsos

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia: At giant-breed body weight and muscle mass, joint dysplasia causes significant wear acceleration. OFA data shows elevated hip dysplasia rates in Cane Corsos. Joint supplementation at giant-breed doses from 12 months is proactive management.
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM): Cane Corsos are among the large/giant breeds with elevated DCM rates. Cardiac supplement support — omega-3, taurine — is appropriate from age 2–3.
  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV): Deep-chested giant breeds have the highest GDV risk. GDV is a surgical emergency — supplements don't prevent it, but general gut health support and feeding management (smaller meals, no exercise after eating) are important.

Cane Corso supplement stack — giant-breed doses from 12 months

  • Glucosamine HCl + chondroitin sulfate: Giant-breed dose: glucosamine 2,000mg/day + chondroitin 1,600mg/day for a 110-lb Corso. Most commercial products are calibrated for 30–50 lb dogs — calculate dose by body weight.
  • MSM: 2,500–3,000mg/day at giant-breed dose. Provides faster anti-inflammatory onset (2–4 weeks) while glucosamine works on cartilage remodeling.
  • Omega-3 (EPA+DHA) at therapeutic dose: ~4,000–5,000mg EPA+DHA daily for a 110-lb Cane Corso. Addresses both joint synovial inflammation and cardiac support simultaneously.
  • Taurine: 1,000mg twice daily. Cardiac muscle support — particularly relevant given DCM risk in giant breeds.
