Supplements for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have one of the most serious breed-specific health profiles of any dog. Mitral valve disease (MVD) affects virtually all Cavaliers by age 10; syringomyelia (SM) and Chiari-like malformation affect an estimated 70%+ of Cavaliers to some degree; and skin allergies, ear infections, and eye conditions are common secondary concerns.

The CKCS health profile and supplements

Cardiac: MVD in Cavaliers is the breed's defining health challenge. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA+DHA) at therapeutic doses have documented cardiac benefit in dogs with early heart disease — and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine recommends omega-3 supplementation as an adjunct for dogs with Stage B1/B2 MVD. This should be coordinated with your cardiologist.

Neurological pain (SM/CM): Syringomyelia creates chronic neuropathic pain, often presenting as phantom scratching at the neck/shoulder, vocalizing during movement, and sensitivity to touch. Anti-inflammatory supplementation (omega-3, curcumin) addresses the inflammatory component of this pain, though SM is primarily a structural condition requiring veterinary management.

Skin and ear: Cavaliers are allergy-prone, and their floppy ears create a warm, moist environment for recurring ear infections. Quercetin, bromelain, and omega-3 address the allergic immune driver; probiotics support the gut-immune axis calibration that reduces systemic allergic disease.

The CKCS supplement protocol

  • Omega-3 (EPA+DHA) 1000–1500mg — cardiac + anti-inflammatory; most important single supplement for the breed
  • Allergy support (quercetin + bromelain) — for the significant allergy subset; ear and skin inflammation
  • Digestive Care (probiotics + enzymes) — gut-immune calibration; stool quality in Cavaliers often improves dramatically
  • Joint Care — for mature Cavaliers; SM-related pain has an inflammatory component where joint supplements provide some relief
