Dachshund Back Supplements: IVDD and Spinal Support

Dachshunds have a 25% lifetime risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — the highest of any breed. Their elongated spine and chondrodystrophic (cartilage-abnormal) genetics predispose them to disc calcification and herniation. IVDD is a veterinary emergency when it causes paralysis, but supplement support can address the inflammatory environment that accelerates disc degeneration.

Supplements for Dachshund spinal support

  • Omega-3 (EPA+DHA): Reduces spinal inflammatory burden. In dogs with IVDD, chronic spinal inflammation accelerates adjacent disc degeneration. Omega-3 at therapeutic dose (400–600mg EPA+DHA for a 20-lb Dachshund) is the highest-evidence anti-inflammatory supplement for spinal conditions.
  • Glucosamine + chondroitin: Supports intervertebral disc matrix — discs are a form of fibrocartilage. Small-breed dose: glucosamine 500mg/day + chondroitin 400mg/day.
  • MSM: Anti-inflammatory analgesic — relevant for Dachshunds with chronic spinal pain. 500mg/day for a 20-lb dog.

Critical management note

Dachshunds with acute IVDD (sudden weakness, inability to walk) require emergency veterinary care. Supplements do not treat acute disc herniation — surgery or strict rest under veterinary guidance is the appropriate intervention. Supplements address the chronic inflammatory environment before and after acute episodes.
