Dog IBD Supplements: Probiotics, Omega-3, and Enzyme Support

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in dogs involves chronic immune dysregulation of the intestinal mucosa — dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability, and abnormal cytokine production all drive the condition. Supplements address each of these mechanisms as adjuncts to veterinary treatment.

Probiotics as the foundation

The IBD gut microbiome is consistently dysbiotic — multi-strain probiotics with prebiotic fiber restore diversity, reduce pathogenic populations, and improve the gut barrier integrity compromised in IBD. L. acidophilus, B. animalis, and E. faecium SF68 are the target strains. Begin after veterinary diagnosis and maintain indefinitely.

Omega-3 for intestinal inflammation

EPA and DHA reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokine production (particularly IL-6, TNF-α) that drives intestinal inflammation in IBD. Therapeutic doses (40mg/lb daily) are appropriate for active IBD management — consult your veterinarian on timing relative to medications.
