Glucosamine for Dogs
Glucosamine is the most studied supplement for canine joint health — but form matters, dose matters, and using it alone produces weaker results than the combination. Here's the evidence-based guide.
What glucosamine does
Glucosamine provides substrate for glycosaminoglycan synthesis — the building blocks of aggrecan, the primary structural proteoglycan of cartilage. When joints degenerate, chondrocytes lose the raw materials to produce adequate cartilage matrix. Supplemental glucosamine directly addresses this deficit, supporting cartilage synthesis while exerting secondary anti-inflammatory effects through cytokine inhibition.
Glucosamine HCl vs. glucosamine sulfate
Glucosamine HCl provides more active glucosamine per dose (83% vs 65% for sulfate). At equivalent active glucosamine doses, both forms show comparable efficacy. Most veterinary orthopedic specialists prefer glucosamine HCl for its concentration advantage.
Therapeutic doses
- Small dogs (<20 lbs): 250–500mg daily
- Medium dogs (20–45 lbs): 500–1000mg daily
- Large dogs (45–90 lbs): 1000–1500mg daily
- Giant dogs (90+ lbs): 1500–2000mg daily
Most commercial products are dosed below these thresholds — underdosing is the most common reason owners see no effect.
Why the combination is essential
Glucosamine addresses cartilage synthesis (anabolic side). Chondroitin sulfate inhibits the matrix metalloproteinases breaking cartilage down (catabolic side). MSM reduces the NF-κB–driven inflammation accelerating the process. Each ingredient addresses a different aspect of the same problem — the combination consistently outperforms any individual ingredient in head-to-head trials.
Expect 8–12 weeks for full effect — glucosamine accumulates in joint tissue over time. Consistent daily dosing is essential; stopping prevents tissue-level accumulation from completing.
