Supplements for Labrador Retrievers
Labradors are the most popular breed in the US and one of the most medically costly. Their unique genetic predispositions — including the POMC hunger mutation, high dysplasia rates, and allergy susceptibility — call for a targeted supplement protocol started early.
The Labrador health profile
Joint disease: Labs rank among the top breeds for both hip and elbow dysplasia. Elbow dysplasia is particularly prevalent. For a breed that loves to retrieve, run, and swim, joint degeneration in middle age is a significant quality-of-life concern.
Obesity: Roughly 25% of Labradors carry the POMC gene mutation, which disrupts hunger and satiety signaling — these dogs are genuinely always hungry, not just food-motivated. Weight management is non-optional for this breed, and supplementation works best on a lean dog.
Allergies: Environmental allergies are common in Labs, particularly chocolate and yellow lines. Recurring ear infections and chronic paw licking are the most frequent presentations.
The supplement protocol by life stage
Puppy (8 weeks – 18 months): Probiotic support daily (especially after any antibiotic course) + early joint supplementation by 12 months for hip and elbow dysplasia prevention.
Adult (18 months – 7 years): Maintain joint support (glucosamine 1000–1500mg + chondroitin + MSM). Add allergy/immune support if seasonal symptoms emerge — quercetin, bromelain, omega-3 at 40+ mg EPA+DHA per pound. Rigorous weight management throughout.
Senior (7+ years): All four categories. Digestive enzyme support as pancreatic function declines. Increase omega-3 for cognitive support alongside anti-inflammatory effect.
Most critical supplement for Labs: joint + omega-3
The combination of weight-appropriate glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM and therapeutic omega-3s addresses both the structural (cartilage) and inflammatory components of Lab joint disease. Starting both by 12–18 months is standard preventive care for this breed.
MAYA's Joint Care and Allergy supplement address Labs' two primary health vulnerabilities. Full protocol: Complete Wellness Stack.
