Omega-3 for Dogs
Omega-3 fatty acids are the broadest-spectrum anti-inflammatory supplement available for dogs — relevant to allergies, joint disease, skin and coat, kidney function, and cognitive aging. Here's what you need to know to use them effectively.
The omega-6:omega-3 ratio problem
Your dog's body uses fatty acids to produce inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signaling compounds. Omega-6 fats produce pro-inflammatory eicosanoids; omega-3 fats produce anti-inflammatory ones. The ratio in the diet determines the body's default inflammatory level. Most commercial dog foods have an omega-6:omega-3 ratio of 10:1 to 20:1. The target for reduced inflammation is 4:1 or lower. Supplementing EPA and DHA corrects this ratio and directly lowers the systemic inflammatory baseline.
EPA vs. DHA: what each does
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) — primary anti-inflammatory compound. Most relevant to allergies, joint disease, skin inflammation, and kidney disease.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) — critical for brain and retinal tissue. Supports cognitive function in aging dogs and neural development in puppies.
Both matter. Always check the EPA+DHA content specifically — not total fish oil volume.
Fish oil vs. flaxseed oil
Flaxseed oil provides ALA, which dogs convert to EPA at roughly 5–10% efficiency and to DHA at less than 1%. Fish oil or algae oil provides EPA and DHA directly. For meaningful anti-inflammatory effect in dogs, fish oil or marine-sourced omega-3 is significantly more effective than plant-based alternatives.
Therapeutic doses by condition
- General maintenance: 20mg combined EPA+DHA per pound of body weight per day
- Inflammatory conditions (allergy, arthritis): 40–55mg EPA+DHA per pound per day
A 50-lb dog with allergies at therapeutic dose needs 2,000–2,750mg EPA+DHA daily — significantly more than most owners realize.
Timeline
- 4 weeks: Inflammatory signaling begins to shift, early coat changes
- 8 weeks: Coat visibly improved, allergy and joint symptoms reduced
- 12 weeks: Full anti-inflammatory effect
