Rottweiler Supplements

Rottweilers have some of the highest elbow dysplasia rates of any breed (~40% OFA prevalence) and elevated osteosarcoma risk. Proactive joint and anti-inflammatory supplementation from 12 months is standard rational care for this breed.

Joint health: the primary concern

Elbow dysplasia in Rottweilers is a significant quality-of-life concern — elbow disease causes chronic forelimb pain that affects activity level and long-term mobility. Start glucosamine (1000–1500mg) + chondroitin + MSM + turmeric by 12 months, before radiographic changes appear. OFA elbow screening by 2 years is recommended.

Omega-3 at high therapeutic dose

At 40–55mg EPA+DHA per pound, therapeutic omega-3 addresses joint inflammation, the anti-inflammatory environment relevant to osteosarcoma risk, and cardiac support. For an 110-lb Rottweiler, that's 4,400–6,000mg EPA+DHA daily — substantially more than most product labels recommend.

Allergy management

Rottweilers have above-average atopy rates. Quercetin + bromelain at weight-appropriate doses, started before allergy season. Paw licking and ear infections are the most common presentations.

Weight management: non-optional

Excess weight on a Rottweiler's dysplastic elbows is directly damaging. A lean body condition score (4–5/9, ribs palpable with light pressure) is essential. Supplementation works best on a lean dog — the mechanical load reduction from ideal weight often produces more functional improvement than any supplement.
