Senior Dog Supplements

A dog's body changes significantly after age 7. Enzyme production declines, joint wear accumulates, gut microbiome diversity drops, and inflammatory regulation becomes less precise. Here's the supplement protocol that addresses each of these changes.

What changes at age 7+

Digestive enzyme production declines — the pancreas produces less amylase, lipase, and protease. Senior dogs often develop loose stool, gas, or poor coat quality on the same diet they've always eaten. Supplementing enzymes directly compensates for this decline.

Joint cartilage accumulates wear — chondrocyte activity slows, degradative enzymes become more active. The net result is progressive cartilage thinning and joint stiffness, most visible in the first minutes after rest.

Gut microbiome diversity decreases — populations of beneficial Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species drop. Probiotic supplementation actively counteracts microbiome aging.

Skin sebaceous activity declines — less natural skin oil production means drier skin, duller coat, and more susceptibility to skin infections. Omega-3s, biotin, and zinc become more important as natural maintenance mechanisms slow.

The senior supplement protocol

Joint support (most urgent for medium and large breeds): Glucosamine HCl + chondroitin sulfate + MSM at weight-appropriate doses. Add turmeric/curcumin for additional anti-inflammatory support, particularly in dogs already showing stiffness.

Digestive enzymes + probiotics: Often the highest-impact intervention for senior dogs — especially those with loose stool or poor coat despite quality diet. Improvement in coat quality 6–8 weeks after starting digestive support is one of the clearest signals of improved nutrient absorption.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Maintain or increase to therapeutic range (50mg+ EPA+DHA per pound for inflammatory conditions). DHA specifically supports cognitive function — relevant given canine cognitive dysfunction prevalence in dogs over 10.

Skin and coat: Biotin, zinc, vitamin E alongside omega-3 address declining sebaceous function.

When is a dog senior?

  • Small breeds (<20 lbs): 10–12 years
  • Medium breeds (20–50 lbs): 8–10 years
  • Large breeds (50–90 lbs): 7–8 years
  • Giant breeds (>90 lbs): 5–6 years
