Bernese Mountain Dogs are gentle, devoted companions with one of the most challenging health profiles of any breed. Their average lifespan of 7–8 years is significantly shorter than other large breeds, driven primarily by cancer — histiocytic sarcoma alone affects an estimated 25% of Berners, and overall cancer rates may exceed 50%. Combined with high hip and elbow dysplasia rates and a large body that develops slowly, proactive health management is particularly important for this breed.

Cancer: Histiocytic sarcoma, osteosarcoma, and lymphoma all occur at elevated rates in Berners. Omega-3 fatty acids at therapeutic doses have documented anti-tumor immune support effects in dogs — the EPA/DHA-derived SPMs (specialized pro-resolving mediators) modulate tumor-associated inflammatory environments.
