Fish Oil for Dogs
Fish oil is the most broadly effective supplement for dogs — it reduces inflammation behind allergies, joint disease, and skin problems simultaneously. But the dose matters far more than most owners realize.
Why omega-3 from fish oil works
Most commercial dog diets are high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3. This imbalance shifts the eicosanoid signaling system toward pro-inflammatory compounds. Fish oil provides EPA and DHA — the omega-3 fatty acids that counterbalance omega-6 and shift the inflammatory setpoint. This is a true root-cause correction, not symptom management.
EPA drives the anti-inflammatory effect in adults; DHA is the primary structural fat in neural and retinal tissue (critical for puppies and senior cognitive support).
The dose problem
The most common failure with fish oil is underdosing. Most supplement labels recommend a fraction of the therapeutic dose. Therapeutic doses for anti-inflammatory effect:
- Maintenance/prevention: 20–30mg combined EPA+DHA per pound of body weight per day
- Therapeutic (allergies, arthritis, skin disease): 40–55mg combined EPA+DHA per pound per day
Always read EPA+DHA content on the label — not total fish oil volume or total omega-3. A 1,000mg fish oil capsule typically contains only 300mg EPA+DHA.
Fish oil vs. flaxseed: why it matters
Flaxseed oil provides ALA, which dogs convert to EPA at less than 10% efficiency and to DHA at less than 1%. To reach equivalent EPA from flaxseed would require 20–40x the dose. Fish oil and algae oil provide EPA and DHA directly in the forms dogs use.
Quality and freshness
Fish oil oxidizes. Rancid fish oil may be actively harmful and the "fishy burp" smell is a sign of oxidation, not an inherent property of good fish oil. Store tightly sealed in the refrigerator, check expiry dates, and look for products with stated peroxide value or third-party testing.
Applications by condition
Allergies: Reduces allergic inflammatory signaling at the root. Work in combination with quercetin + bromelain for synergistic allergy management.
Joint disease: Multiple well-designed studies show reduced lameness scores and decreased NSAID requirements in arthritic dogs on therapeutic omega-3 doses.
Skin and coat: Omega-3 deficiency is the most common cause of dull coat, excessive shedding, and dry skin. Corrections typically visible at 8–12 weeks.
