Irish Wolfhound Supplements: DCM, Joint, and Longevity Support

Irish Wolfhounds have a 6–7 year average lifespan, DCM rates exceeding 30%, and significant GDV risk. Starting supplements at 12 months — not 18–24 as for most large breeds — covers the largest proportion of their compressed adult life. Giant-breed dosing applies: a 120-lb Irish Wolfhound needs approximately 4× the dose of a 30-lb dog.

Omega-3 at cardiac therapeutic dose

The ACVIM endorses omega-3 for dogs with confirmed cardiac disease. For Irish Wolfhounds — a breed where DCM onset is early and common — omega-3 supplementation from 12 months is a proactive measure widely recommended by veterinary cardiologists. Target: 40mg EPA+DHA per pound per day. A 120-lb IWH needs approximately 4,800mg EPA+DHA daily.

Taurine and cardiac support

Taurine deficiency has been linked to DCM, particularly in dogs on grain-free diets. Taurine supplementation for Irish Wolfhounds on grain-free diets is reasonable; discuss dosing with a veterinary cardiologist. Annual cardiac echocardiograms from age 2–3 are the standard monitoring protocol.
