Pomeranian Supplements: Alopecia X, Patellar Luxation, and Heart Support

Pomeranians are prone to Alopecia X (hormonal coat loss), patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, and mitral valve disease. All supplements must be dosed for a 4–8 lb dog — label serving sizes calibrated for larger breeds will overdose a Pomeranian. Toy-breed dosing: 1/5 to 1/6 of standard label dose.

Alopecia X and coat support

Alopecia X affects Pomeranians at higher rates than almost any other breed — producing bilateral trunk hair loss and skin darkening. Melatonin is the most consistently used supplement, producing hair regrowth in a subset of affected dogs. Biotin + zinc + vitamin E supports coat quality in unaffected coat and skin barrier in exposed areas. Omega-3 reduces secondary skin inflammation.

Patellar luxation management

Glucosamine + chondroitin + MSM at toy-breed doses slows secondary osteoarthritis progression in dogs with medial patellar luxation grades 1–2. For grade 3–4, surgery is typically required — supplements help with post-surgical recovery and ongoing joint protection.
